MALARIA

Visitors to Kruger National Park and adjoining areas, to the northern parts of KwaZulu are advised these areas fall within the malaria zone. Recent surveys for the Kruger Park have suggested that the chance of an average visitor getting malaria is roughly 1 in 24,000. Most cases occur in the wet season, February to May being the peak risk period. No malaria is found in other areas of South Africa.

With no substantial fences between Kruger National Park and the Balule Nature Reserve this project is located in real “BIG 5” country. Volunteers can do a course in Management of a Game Farm and Nature reserve plus a Game Ranger course. This project offers volunteers the chance to live in an unrivalled open ecological system.

NATIONAL ANTHEM

'Die Stem van Suid-Afrika' - 'The Call of South Africa'
The search started in 1910 for a National Anthem.
It was a poem written by Cornelis Jacob Langenhhoven in May 1918. It was not till May 1957 that the Prime Minister announced the government had accepted 'Die Stem' as the official National Anthem. The English version was adopted in April 1994.

'Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika'
A hymn by Enoch Mankayi Sontonga in 1897, sung for the first time in 1899. The ANC adopted it as its National Anthem in 1925.

On May 1995 the Anthems were merged into one version, comprising of five languages.

TIFFINDELL - SKI RESORT

The snowy winter world of Tiffindell Ski Resort, in the Southern Drakensberg, the highest mountain peak in the Cape (3001m), Ben McDhui.
